Why am I getting an error that a certificate may not be valid?

Problem:
When you send or receive messages in your email program you receive a popup message that a certificate may not be trusted or that the certificate name doesn't match the server name.

Apple Mail:
Microsoft Outlook 2010:

Solution :
We have a secure certificate on our mail server but the validated domain in the certificate is for mail.brainstorminternet.net only. The fact that the certificate is only issued for one domain doesn’t affect the security of the certificate but it causes programs to complain, some more than others, and Apple Mail is the pickiest. In Apple Mail you could safely check Always Trust, but when you restart the Mail program it may pop up again. In Outlook 2010 you can permanently accept the certificate by clicking "View Certificate" then "Install Certificate," then Next, Next, and Finish.
A second option is to change your server names to mail.brainstorminternet.net. In Apple Mail go to Mail | Preferences | Accounts, and change your server name to mail.brainstorminternet.net which will match the name on the certificate. You may also have to go to Outgoing Server | Edit Server List and change the outgoing server name to mail.brainstorminternet.net as well. In Microsoft Outlook go either to Tools | Account Settings (Outlook 2007) or File | Account Settings | Account Settings (Outlook 2010). A third option is just to uncheck SSL. SSL encrypts your data between your computer and the mail server, but offers no assurance that the data will be encrypted between mail servers or to the recipient, so even using SSL you can’t afford to put sensitive information in an email anyway. So if you can’t afford to put in sensitive information why bother using SSL? |
